Homestay Treks- Community-Based Tourism in Peru

New Homestay Treks

Are you looking for an active, authentic adventure while traveling in Peru?  Our new homestay treks offer the perfect opportunity to get off the beaten path, immerse yourself in local culture, and empower traditional communities in the region.

Ayni Peru Expedition is excited to present our new series of treks in Cusco, Peru – homestay to homestay trek routes, most of which include visits to Machu Picchu.  We’re beginning with three scenic & fascinating routes, ranging from an overnight trek to a 5D/4N program.    All take place in the Lares area currently, with plans to add Choquequirao and Ausangate options for 2025.

With all homestay trek routes, trekkers can expect beautiful scenery, delicious meals prepared with fresh local ingredients and a warm welcome in each village.    Accommodation each night is in a private room on your host family’s property, with dinner and breakfast included.   Your days will be spent  hiking to the next traditional village, accompanied by a licensed guide that speaks English, Spanish and Quechua.  There are abundant opportunities to learn about Andean culture through chatting with your hosts, helping to prepare meals, and participating in host-lead activities that focus on the daily lives, language and culture of locals.  Some examples include traditional agriculture, medicinal plants, weaving, and alpaca & llama care.

Community-Based Tourism

These homestay treks are an expansion of our community-based tourism project, which includes overnight homestays, local-led community activities and lunchtime visits with Peruvian families.  There are two primary goals for our project: to create unique, authentic and unforgettable experiences for our travelers and to expand the economic benefits of tourism to remote communities and others that may be excluded from participating in tourism in common ways.

Our new trek routes are an integral part of the Ayni Peru community-based tourism project because they allow us to bring trekkers to some of the most remote villages we work with.  Furthermore, they’re an ideal adventure for travelers looking to get off the beaten path and immerse themselves in traditional Andean life; in other words, community-based trekking is a mutually beneficial proposition for everyone involved.

Local Benefits

In summary, joining one of our homestay treks provides important benefits that include:

  • Empowerment of local communities: we work directly with individual families and cooperatives; they determine their rates and activities offered, which provide full ownership of tourism where they live.
  • Appreciation of traditional practices and ways of life: by creating and leading activities, community members help to preserve and promote their cultural heritage.
  • Economic & environmental sustainability: our homestay treks focus on remote communities that are often excluded from the economic benefits that international tourism. Locals can stay in their villages with their families rather than traveling frequently or moving to tourism centers in search of work.  In addition, personal investment in community tourism projects is a powerful motivator to conserve resources and restore the natural environment.
