For centuries, Mama Simona has been considered sacred. This is because it is an Apu, a powerful & sacred mountain with a spirit. Interestingly, it is one of few female ones. While many Apus are characterized by the steep and jagged lines, Mama Simona has rounded curves and a large rock outcropping resembling a feminine bust. Because of its relationship with fertility, is was a location of many important ceremonies for the Incas. In addition, its views of Apu Salkatay, Veronica, Ausangate, Chicón and the Sacred Valley increase it´s importance. Today, only one ceremony per year takes place here. Because she is associated fertility, locals gather at Mama Simona to ask for children in August. This is also when the month of Andean New Year is celebrated throughout the region.
