Our Peruvian Highlands tour offers the opportunity to visit the best of Peru`s southern Andes. First, travel to beautiful Arequipa and spend a night in the dramatic Colca Canyon before continuing to serene Lake Titicaca. Finally, charming Cusco and magnificent Machu Picchu provide a perfect conclusion to your travel.
Touch down in Arequipa and head to your hotel constructed of traditional volcanic sillar stone, where Arequipa`s nickname the “white city” originates from. Spend the afternoon getting acquainted with historic Santa Catalina Monastery, the Inca mummy Juanita, and appreciating lovely colonial buildings and the pleasant, sunny climate that typically characterizes the city.
Set out for the Colca Canyon, taking in views of nearby volcanoes, beautiful natural landscapes, and dramatic panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. We avoid more touristy Colca towns in favor of small villages on the opposite of the canyon, where we`ll stay with a local family and visit hot springs and pre-Hispanic ruins.
Rise early to visit to Cruz del Condor, where we`ll have a chance to spot these enormous birds soaring through the canyon. Pass small traditional villages along the way, then continue on to the shores of Lake Titicaca..
After breakfast, depart on a unique Lake Titicaca tour. Travel by boat over the stunningly blue lake to experience indigenous culture in secluded areas of the lake`s famed islands. We`ll visit the floating reed islands of Uros and Taquile, a UNESCO world heritage site famed for high quality weavings and distinct cultural traditions & language
Set out across the starkly beautiful Peruvian altiplano, with stops at a breathtaking colonial church, a visit with alpacas, seldom visited but fascinating catacombs and more.
Begin the day on a private tour of historic Cusco, former center of the Inca Empire. Learn about the city`s remarkable past and important spots, then break for a traditional lunch. Spend the afternoon on an a pleasent hike, exploring Inca ruins high above the city.
Traverse the beautiful Sacred Valley, stopping at interesting Inca ruins, cascading salt ponds and an exceptional community-based tourism project to gain insight into local traditions. In the late afternoon, enjoy an incredibly scenic train ride to the foot of Machu Picchu.
Explore Machu Picchu! Tour renowned areas of the arecheological complex , plus lesser-known (but equally fabulous) spots. You`ll have time to explore on your own or climb Huayna Picchu before returning to Cusco.
At the appropriate time, transfer to the Cusco airport for your return flight to Lima and interntional flight home.
