Pallay Punchu Tours – Explore it First!

Pallay Punchu Tours

Are you looking for a scenic day trip from Cusco, or an overnight homestay escape from more tourism-oriented destinations in the area? Pallay Punchu ( or Pallay Poncho) could be your ideal destination!

Located in the district of Layo, in the province of Canas, Pallay Punchu is several hours outside of the city of Cusco.   The colorfully striped mountain rises up near the shores of Laguna Langui, and offers incredible views of surrounding valleys and snowcapped peaks.   The bands of colorful rock that comprise the top of Pallay Punchu often draw comparisons to the Rainbow Mountain and Palccoyo, which can also be visited on day tours from Cusco.  However, there are several important differences with a Pallay Punchu tour:

  • Pallay Punchu sees far fewer visitors each day than either the Rainbow Mountain or Palccoyo, making it an excellent choice for anyone looking to avoid crowds and enjoy the mountain’s natural beauty in peace.
  • The geological formations found at Pallay Punchu are distinct and varied; visually, a Pallay Punchu tour is quite different from either Palccoyo or the Rainbow Mountain. In addition, Laguna Langui offers a stunning backdrop to the beautiful mountain.
  • There are different routes to Pallay Punchu, each offering opportunities to explore along the way. Because of this, Ayni Peru offers an extended overnight Pallay Punchu homestay program that include a variety of activities.

Pallay Punchu Day Tours

From Cusco, Pallay Punchu day tours begin early in the morning.   After several hours, we’ll break for a filling breakfast and continue to the trek departure point.  Ascending Pallay Punchu takes about an hour, along a narrow switchback path.  Along the way, your professional guide will explain the geological formation of the mountain, about the area in general, and answer any questions you may have.

The views from the path are truly stunning, with colorful nearby hills and mountains, grazing llamas and alpacas, and snowcapped peaks in the distance.   In the backdrop, Laguna Langui will stretch out below you.  As you reach the top, it will be clear there’s a lot to be seen.

As the path winds along the top of the mountain, there are a series of different geological features.  The first are sharp, jutting formations with the mountain’s characteristically colored stripes.  Laguna Langui sits.  From there, the ridge rolls in gentle, striped waves toward a colorful lookout point.  The final leg is a dramatically red dropoff point, where your descent begins.  You’ll continue down another set of switchbacks to your scenic lunch spot and enjoy a picnic lunch before heading back to Cusco.  Early evening drop-off at your hotel.

Pallay Punchu Homestay Tours

Ayni Peru’s  Pallay Punchu homestay tours are 2D/1N programs that include transportation, guide, activities, meals and overnight accommodation with a local family.    There are four main advantages to a longer Pallay Punchu program like this:

  • An immersive experience: you’ll be able to get to know the area and people a little better, including meals and activities with your host family.
  • You’ll be able to take advantage of the many things there are to see and do in the area, including archaeological sites, boating, biking, sampling local foods and more.
  • The drive time between Cusco and Pallay Puncho will be split into two days, which is a more comfortable way to travel.
  • Spending more time in local communities means money spent there. This helps support Peruvians that don’t benefit economically from tourism to the same extent as those living in popular tourism destinations.
