For Classic Salkantay Trek or Remote Salkantay Trek only, please contact us
The famous Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu passes along gorgeous Salkantay mountain, one of the highest in the region. The route features physical challenge through incredibly diverse scenery, plus a final day at magical Machu Picchu
Our Remote Salkantay trek route improves on this classic trek with key changes; we skip noisy campsites, trek through remote, beautiful areas that few visitors have seen, and gain additonal time in higher altitude areas to enjoy time with the awesome snowcapped peaks Salkantay is celebrated for. Prior to departure, we`ll spend the day getting to know the best of Cusco and the Sacred Valley with scenic hikes and visits to Inca ruins, traditional towns, and little-known highlights!
As with all Ayni Peru travel, this itinerary can be customized or combined with tours throughout Peru and Bolivia. You are also welcome to reserve the trek portion only. Please contact us for custom itineraries, quotes and questions.
Fly to historic Cusco, former center of the Inca Empire. Spend the afternoon wandering cobblestone streets, visiting an authentic local market, and learning about Cusco`s most important spots.
Begin the day high above Cusco, hiking along an original Inca trail! Descend back to town slowly, stopping to visit Inca ruins and enjoy a picnic lunch along the way.
Set out for the beautiful Sacred Valley, stopping at interesting Inca ruins and hiking to cascading salt ponds and an exceptional community-based tourism project to gain insight into local traditions.
Set out for the gorgeous Remote Salkantay trek! We`ll leave Cusco early and begin trekking through the most remote leg of the route.
This is the most challenging, and one of the most scenic. We`ll cross three mountain passes, including the highest of the trek. The snowy peaks surrounding us are truly spectacular, and we end the day at camp below the glaciers of stunning Salkantay mountain.
Morning ascent to Salkantay Pass, where we`ll enjoy incredible views of the surrounding peaks and valleys. From there we begin the decent to the warm and humid high jungle, enjoying more comfortable temperatures and increasingly lush vegetation..
Continue through the high jungle, passing dramatic waterfalls and small banana, coffee and avocado farms. Along the trail we`ll encounter orchids, tropical birds and arrive at a small family-owned coffee farm for lunch and an overnight stay.
Learn about organic coffee cultivation, then roast and grind your own breakfast coffee! After breakfast we`ll zipline through the Santa Teresa Valley before continuing on foot to Aguas Calientes.
Explore Machu Picchu! We`ll visit famous highlights, plus lesser-known (but equally fabulous) spots.
At the appropriate time, transfer to the Cusco airport for your return flight to Lima and interntional flight home.
